Indian expats in the UAE can now apply for the new chip-embedded ePassport, offering advanced security and faster immigration clearances. However, officials have clarified that replacing the current passport is not mandatory. Traditional passports will remain valid until their expiry date.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), ePassports are being gradually introduced across Indian Passport Offices and missions abroad, including those in the UAE. Only applicants from technically enabled passport offices will receive ePassports moving forward.
What Makes the ePassport Different
The ePassport combines traditional paper with electronic technology. It features a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and antenna embedded within the cover, storing personal and biometric data of the passport holder. It can be identified by a gold-colored chip symbol printed on the front cover.
Additionally, the numbering format has been updated: older passports use one letter followed by seven digits, while the new ePassport follows a two-letter and six-digit format.
Advantages of the ePassport
The primary advantage lies in enhanced data integrity and security. All personal and biometric information is digitally stored and cryptographically signed, enabling immigration officials worldwide to authenticate documents electronically.
This minimizes risks of forgery, duplication, or fraudulent passport use, while ensuring faster and more secure border checks. According to the MEA, the ePassport’s dual storage — printed and digital — strengthens the verification process and curbs identity theft.
Enhanced Security Infrastructure
The ePassport’s digital protection relies on Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology — a globally recognized framework ensuring the authenticity, confidentiality, and integrity of stored information.
Thanks to PKI encryption, border control systems can instantly confirm that the ePassport’s data has not been tampered with, allowing smoother, faster, and more reliable immigration clearances for travelers.
A Step Toward Smarter Travel
With the UAE missions now fully equipped to issue ePassports, Indian citizens in the Emirates can look forward to more streamlined international travel. While adoption is optional for now, the rollout marks a key step in India’s broader move toward digital transformation and secure cross-border mobility.
