As AI tools and always-on digital services become an integral part of daily life, the cybersecurity habits many users relied on a few years ago may no longer be enough. From AI-powered scams to trending social media prompts that encourage sharing personal information, online interactions are evolving rapidly. Kaspersky, a global leader in cybersecurity and digital privacy, shares five practical tips to help users stay safe online:
1. Be cautious with verification requests. Scammers increasingly mimic legitimate verification processes, asking users to confirm accounts, update payment information, or approve login attempts. Pause before sharing any codes or personal data, and always verify requests independently through official websites or by contacting service providers.
2. Practice safe AI usage. AI agents, chatbots, and multimedia apps are convenient and engaging, but uploading high-resolution images or personal data can compromise privacy. Facial images can act as biometric identifiers, and once shared, control over their storage or reuse may be limited. Review privacy policies, limit the personal data you provide, and avoid uploading sensitive documents.
3. Educate about AI. AI assistants are increasingly used by children for schoolwork or entertainment. Parents should discuss responsible AI use, digital privacy, and the importance of not oversharing information, helping children develop safe digital habits from an early age.
4. Audit your online subscriptions. Over time, unused accounts and forgotten apps accumulate personal data and payment information. Regularly review subscriptions, remove dormant accounts, and check which apps have access to your information to reduce data exposure.
5. Protect your devices and home. Older devices may have unpatched vulnerabilities. Ensure smartphones, laptops, routers, and smart home devices are updated, use strong passwords and multi-factor authentication, and secure home Wi-Fi networks. Change default passwords and review device permissions to strengthen overall security.
“Technology evolves quickly, and our online behaviour should keep pace,” says Brandon Muller, Kaspersky Technical Expert for the Middle East and Africa. “By reviewing privacy settings, managing app permissions, and removing unnecessary connections, users can reduce exposure to modern cyber risks while enjoying the benefits of AI and connected devices.”
