Holiday Cyber Risks: How to Stay Safe While Working Remotely Abroad

Holiday Cyber Risks

As the holiday season unfolds across many parts of the world, remote work continues to blur the line between leisure and office life. Widespread connectivity — from airports and train stations to hotels and cafés — now enables travelers to stay online almost anywhere. With free Wi-Fi and reliable 4G or 5G networks, hybrid work is easier than ever, even while on vacation.

However, this growing convenience also presents new cybersecurity threats. According to recent research by Kaspersky, cybercriminals are increasingly targeting travelers who rely on unsecured public networks, making personal and financial data more vulnerable than ever.

Kaspersky Findings: Paris Wi-Fi Security Under the Spotlight

Ahead of the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, Kaspersky experts analyzed nearly 25,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots in the French capital. The results were concerning — almost 25% of these networks had weak or no encryption.

Such vulnerabilities give cybercriminals an open window to intercept sensitive information, from online banking credentials to company login details. In a busy city hosting global events, where travelers may be distracted or unfamiliar with their surroundings, the risk of falling victim to cyberattacks is significantly higher.

Why Travelers Are Easy Targets

Travel inherently disrupts routine. Unfamiliar locations, different languages, and the need to stay connected create the perfect conditions for attackers to exploit. Travelers often have their guard down, making them prime targets for phishing, man-in-the-middle attacks, and data theft.

For remote workers combining business with leisure — a growing trend known as “workations” — the stakes are even higher, as corporate data can also be at risk.

Top Cybersecurity Practices for a Safe Holiday Workation

1. Use a VPN for Secure Connections

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) encrypts internet traffic, preventing hackers from intercepting personal or corporate data. This is essential when accessing work emails, financial accounts, or cloud files over public Wi-Fi.

2. Switch to an eSIM for Reliable Mobile Data

An eSIM allows travelers to connect to local networks without swapping physical SIM cards, reducing the need to rely on unsecured hotspots. Services like Kaspersky eSIM Store let users purchase and activate data plans in advance, ensuring instant and secure connectivity upon arrival.

3. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

With devices often left unattended during travel, enabling 2FA on all accounts adds an extra layer of security. This ensures that even if passwords are compromised, unauthorized access is still blocked.

Layered Protection: The Best Defense

While VPNs, eSIMs, and 2FA are powerful tools, they should be combined with comprehensive cybersecurity solutions. Modern antivirus software, such as Kaspersky Premium, not only blocks malware but also detects phishing attempts and safeguards financial data.

Kaspersky recommends that remote workers invest in multi-layered protection, blending proactive habits with real-time digital defenses to keep both personal and corporate data safe while traveling.

The Takeaway

The blend of travel and work offers unmatched flexibility, but it also demands a higher level of vigilance. As major global events like the Paris Olympics draw millions of visitors, cybersecurity awareness must be part of every traveler’s checklist. By adopting smart tools and safe browsing habits, travelers can enjoy the freedom of staying connected — without compromising security.
