GE Vernova, listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol (NYSE: GEV), has announced the signing of new agreements with Middle Delta Electricity Production Company, a subsidiary of the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company, to implement strategic projects at the Benha and Nubaria power plants in Egypt.
This move comes as part of broader efforts to modernize Egypt’s electricity generation infrastructure and enhance operational efficiency in line with national energy security goals.
Advanced Technology Upgrades to Enhance Performance
The scope of work includes implementing two advanced gas path (AGP) upgrades on two 9F gas turbines at the Benha power plant, in addition to signing long-term service agreements for both Benha and Nubaria facilities.
The service agreements extend for:
- 15 years at Benha power plant
- 8 years at Nubaria power plant
These upgrades are expected to improve operational efficiency and increase the output capacity of the turbines, enabling higher electricity generation with optimized resource utilization.
Three-Year Implementation Timeline
The projects are scheduled to be executed over a three-year period, aligning with Egypt’s broader strategy to upgrade its power generation assets, strengthen energy security, and improve efficiency.
This approach reflects a growing focus on optimizing existing infrastructure rather than relying solely on new capacity additions.
Boosting Output and Reducing Emissions
Eng. Mohamed El-Saeed Mohamed El-Abd, Chairman and Managing Director of Middle Delta Electricity Production Company, stated that the agreements include upgrading existing F-class gas turbines, which is expected to:
- Increase power output per turbine
- Improve efficiency by approximately 2%
- Generate additional electricity using less fuel
- Reduce carbon emissions per megawatt-hour
These improvements highlight the role of technological upgrades in balancing higher production with environmental considerations.
Supporting Growing Electricity Demand
Joseph Anis, President and CEO of Gas Power for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa at GE Vernova, emphasized that improving the efficiency and performance of existing power generation fleets plays a critical role in meeting rising electricity demand.
He noted that technologies such as advanced gas path upgrades can help operators:
- Enhance generation capacity
- Extend maintenance intervals
- Improve operational efficiency
- Ensure more reliable power supply
Longstanding Presence in Egypt’s Energy Sector
GE Vernova has supported Egypt’s power sector for more than 50 years through a wide range of equipment, solutions, and services, as well as local capacity building and financing support for energy projects.
Currently, more than 60 GE Vernova gas and steam turbines are operating in Egypt, with a combined generation capacity of approximately 10 gigawatts, reflecting the company’s strong footprint in the market.
Advancing Efficiency and Sustainability Goals
These agreements underscore a strategic shift toward maximizing the efficiency of existing assets while advancing sustainability objectives in the energy sector.
They also highlight the importance of partnerships between global technology providers and local entities in driving infrastructure development and meeting the evolving energy needs of Egypt.
