Kaspersky’s latest research shows that the majority of families today rely on digital means to stay in touch. About 86% of respondents use messaging apps to communicate with family members, 58% engage in regular video calls, and 44% have set up shared streaming accounts.
While digitalization provides unprecedented convenience and flexibility, Kaspersky experts emphasize that it also increases the need for awareness of cybersecurity practices and device protection to prevent potential online threats.
Digital Habits Across Generations
Messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, and Viber remain the most common communication tools among families. Adults aged 35–54 are the most active users, with 89% relying on messaging apps to connect with relatives. Video calls, while popular, are less frequently used, with only 58% of respondents opting for them.
Social media posts and memes also serve as a key method of connection, particularly for younger family members aged 18–34, with 58% sharing humorous content as a bonding activity. Older adults (55+) participate less digitally but still show significant engagement, with 85% using messaging apps and 42% sharing memes or posts. Experts advise educating older relatives about online safety and secure device use.
Cybersecurity Risks in Digital Family Communication
Even for tech-savvy users, online communication comes with risks. Phishing messages and social engineering attacks can target personal chats and accounts. To protect family communication channels, Kaspersky recommends:
-
Enabling two-factor authentication wherever possible
-
Using unique, complex passwords for each account
-
Being cautious of unexpected links or attachments
-
Installing a reliable security solution with anti-phishing protection

Shared Accounts: Convenience vs. Risk
The survey highlights that 70% of families watch movies together in their free time, with 44% using shared streaming accounts. Online gaming is less popular, with only 35% of families engaging in it.
While sharing subscriptions may seem cost-effective, it can expose families to security risks. Shared accounts allow hackers access to all users if one device is compromised, and password reuse across platforms can expose sensitive financial and personal information. Using a password manager for all family accounts is highly recommended to minimize risks.
Expert Advice on Protecting Family Digital Life
“As family life moves increasingly online, we gain new ways to stay close and create memories—but new risks, such as scams and hacking, emerge. Children and older relatives are particularly vulnerable. Protecting your digital privacy and following cybersecurity measures is essential for keeping your family safe,” said Marina Titova, Vice President for Consumer Business at Kaspersky.
